Athletic Therapy

What Is Athletic Therapy?
Certified Athletic Therapists are best known for their quick-thinking on-field emergency care of professional and elite athletes. The first to respond when someone gets hurt, they are experts at injury assessment and rehabilitation. It’s that same mix of on-site care and active rehabilitation skills that makes Athletic Therapists so effective in treating the musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) injuries of all Canadians, whether on the field or in the clinic.
Athletic therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care. They treat a wide range of patients, from kids with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery, using various manual therapies, modalities, exercise prescription and even bracing and taping. The treatment varies but the objective doesn’t: an Athletic Therapist's goal is to help clients return to their usual activities, whether that means playing competitive sports or walking to the mailbox and back.
Certified Athletic Therapists can be recognized by the credential CAT(C).

Concussion Assessment, Management and Treatment

"Concussion is a brain injury and is defined as a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by biomechanical force" (McCrory, et al. 2013).

Concussions can vary in symptoms, severity and recovery time. The early assessment and management of a concussion is critical in a positive outcome. Book a 60 minute appointment today with our certified Athletic Therapist to start your rehabilitation and get back to the activities you love.

Myofascial Cupping

Myofascial cups are placed onto the skin, the air within the cup is removed via a pump. The removal of the air within the cup creates a suction onto the tissue surface as well as a compressive force around the rim. This tension and compression is then manipulated by the therapist to promote the following benefits:
1. Increases blood supply/ heat to the treatment area
2. Increases fluid movement which assists in recovery of damaged tissue and reduction of edema
3. Increases nutrient-rich blood supply to injured tissue
4. Increases the hydration of the fascia
5. Breaks down fascial adhesions
6. Creates a response from the CNS by reducing muscle spasm
7. Passively stretches tissue to improve range of motion
8. Increases responses of the ANS system (relaxation response) and decreases SNS (fight or flight response)
Contraindications
Please read the following list carefully to insure that you are a good candidate for myofascial cupping. The following list states when cupping can not be used as a therapeutic modality:
Decreased sensation, Acute Inflammation, Blood thinners / high or low blood pressure, Pregnancy, Infection, Acute Rheumatoid arthritis, Hypersensitivity of the skin, Aneurysm, Bruise, Acute Venous Disease, Infectious Disease, Deep Vain Thrombosis (DVT), Malignant Tumors and Diabetes

M2T Blade

The M2T blade is a massage instrument used by therapists to increase blood flood, reduce muscle spasm, treat trigger points and break up adhesions in the myofascial tissue. This blade may look intimidating to some but the treatment can be used for both mild and deep tissue treatments. It's perfect for working in difficult areas such as the ITB, plantar fascia, fingers, toes, upper neck and achilles tendon. This treatment is generally used in conjunction with other therapy modalities including but not limited to massage, soft tissue release, PNF stretching, ultrasound, IFC, hot and cold therapy, myofascial cupping as well as a strength and mobility program. If you think M2T Blading could be the right fit for you book an Initial Assessment with our Athletic Therapist.

Functional Movement Screen
Move Well. Move Often.
The Functional Movement Screen tests seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to identifying your functional movement quality. This screen eliminates the guessing game and tells you and your therapist what your movement quality really is. It scores individuals in a simple way to determine if their movement patterns are optimal, acceptable or dysfunctional. The process provides a reliable baseline for actionable and effective steps to improve your performance and recovery.

The FMS assessment at our clinic is an hour long appointment that includes the seven fundamental tests and a customized strength/mobility program based off of your personal results. We will also provide you with an appropriate therapeutic treatment if deemed necessary during testing. This treatment could include myofascial cupping, pain management, ultrasound or M2T blading. If dysfunctions in movement are observed our Certified Athletic Therapist will determine if further orthopedic testing is required.

If you have any questions please contact our office via email
